Food & dietary needs

Plan meals before they become a travel problem.

Turn “vegetarian”, “Jain” or another dietary need into specific questions a restaurant can answer.

Take this into your planning

  • Describe excluded ingredients rather than relying on one dietary label.
  • Check stocks, sauces and preparation as well as the main dish.
  • Keep more than one confirmed meal option around each base.

Write a short ingredient brief

List what each traveller avoids: meat, fish, seafood, eggs, dairy, alcohol, root vegetables or other ingredients. Keep religious preferences, intolerances and diagnosed allergies distinct. The question you send to the restaurant should describe the actual requirement.

JNTO’s vegetarian guidance highlights fish-based stock as a hidden ingredient in some Japanese dishes. That is a useful reminder to ask what is in a sauce or broth even when the visible ingredients appear suitable. It does not mean every stock or dish contains fish.

Match meals to your overnight bases

Before booking accommodation, identify two realistic dinner options close to it and an option for the arrival night. Contact them about the relevant ingredients and service hours. A list of restaurants across a whole city is less useful than a workable meal near the end of your day.

For a countryside stay or a package with included meals, obtain a clear answer from the property before paying. Ask whether the request can be met on each day, not just whether vegetarian food exists somewhere nearby.

Carry a clear translation

Prepare a short translated ingredient request and check its accuracy with a competent speaker where possible. Ask the staff to confirm what can be prepared, rather than presenting a long list as though it guarantees a safe meal.

For diagnosed allergies, consult your clinician for a personal travel plan and discuss cross-contact directly with the provider. This guide cannot assess a kitchen’s suitability and does not offer medical advice.

Plan the travel-day gaps

Ask about meal service on flights and long transfers, and confirm any special meal with the operator. If carrying food, check the destination’s customs and biosecurity rules; something permitted on a flight may still be restricted at arrival.

Keep time for eating in the itinerary. With a group, a confirmed meal and a shorter day can be more useful than an extra stop followed by an uncertain late dinner.

Supporting facts & sources

Fish-based stock and sauces can appear in dishes without visible meat. Ask about ingredients when ordering vegetarian food in Japan.
