Travel insurance

Questions to ask before buying travel insurance.

Compare the cover for your actual route and activities, not just the premium.

Take this into your planning

  • Disclose the information the insurer asks for accurately.
  • Read exclusions, limits and claims requirements.
  • Keep the assistance contact and policy details accessible.

Describe the trip you are insuring

List destinations, dates, transit stops, traveller ages and the activities you intend to do. Ask the insurer or qualified adviser which product addresses those circumstances. MEA recommends appropriate travel and medical insurance; that does not identify a suitable policy for any individual.

If you are extending a stay or adding a destination, ask whether the policy needs a change. Do not infer coverage from a brochure heading.

Read the benefit and its exclusions together

For each benefit that matters to you, read the limit, excess or deductible, exclusions and evidence needed for a claim. Ask about medical assistance, cancellation, delay, baggage and any relevant activity cover in the wording you are considering.

Declare medical history and other required information accurately. Ask the insurer how any existing condition is handled. This checklist neither interprets your contract nor recommends a medical or insurance product.

Ask how help works abroad

Find the emergency-assistance contact and ask how you should use it, including whether prior authorisation is required for particular services. Ask what to do if you cannot reach the helpline immediately. Keep the answer with the policy wording.

Confirm whether payment is arranged directly or whether you may need to pay first and seek reimbursement in the circumstances covered by the policy. Do not assume a particular hospital or destination is included without checking.

Keep the documents you may need

Save policy details, insurer contacts and the documents specified for claims. Share the relevant itinerary and assistance information with someone you trust, keeping sensitive records secure.

Before paying, check any insurance requirement set by the destination authority separately. Buying a policy does not establish visa eligibility or guarantee a claim will be accepted.

Supporting facts & sources

India’s Ministry of External Affairs recommends insurance, keeping document copies separately and leaving an itinerary with someone at home.
